Argentina

From Salta to Humahuaca

I’m heading to Humahuaca from Salta, the largest city in northern Argentina.

I’ll also stop in Jujuy, but I’ll just pass through this time.

It’s about 220km of road from red to yellow on the map.

There are two main routes to get from Salta to Jujuy.

A route that goes around the east side and takes the green Route 34

A route that goes north and goes through the mountains and takes the purple Route 9

I heard Route 9 was more popular, so I chose that this time.

I agree, this route would be nice to ride in the summer.

But now it’s winter and there isn’t enough greenery.

And it would have been a much more enjoyable journey if I hadn’t had my luggage.

And I arrived in the center of Jujuy in about 2 hours.

I checked out the city, and this time I refueled and headed to Humahuaca, 130km away.

The weather hasn’t been very good since I left Jujuy.

However, the weather gradually changed to clear blue skies as I went higher in altitude.

The city of Jujuy is at an altitude of about 1,200m

This area is at an altitude of about 2,200m

This is the halfway point, Purmamarca.

If I go straight down this road, I can get to Atacama in Chile.

That’s something I’m looking forward to next time.

I say hello to Llama and move on.

I arrived in Humahuaca in about 2 hours.

I’ll stay here for a bit and then head to La Quiaca, the border town with Bolivia.

This trip was the most fun I’ve ever been on.

Now, I’ve got a little problem with my motorcycle.

When in 2nd to 4th gear, it’s slipping around 3-4000 RPM.

I think there’s a problem with the gears or chain of the motorcycle, but this is a small town and there’s nothing I can do about it, so I’ll continue moving with caution.

Date of ride: August 22, 2024

This time’s harvest

I have to carry all kinds of spare parts
