From Porvenir, Chile to Punta Arenas
My motorcycle trip this time is from Porvenir on Tierra del Fuego in southern Chile to Punta Arenas.
The distance is about 50km.
I’ll be crossing the Strait of Magellan by ferry.

I will purchase tickets on the TABSA website before I leave.

A motorcycle, including passengers, costs $26,000 (approximately $28.31 USD).
For passengers only, the cost is $9,500 (approximately $10.34 USD).

As I was getting ready to leave, I noticed that my rear tire was flat.
I quickly unloaded my luggage and repaired it.
I’d only driven 3,600 km since I replaced the rear tire in Neuquén, but the center was already pretty worn.
Why?

I found a hole.
It was on the side, so the vibrations of the gravel road I drove on to Porvenir probably caused the tube to get stuck in the wheel shavings.
Since I have to catch the ferry, I’ll just repair this part for now.

Now that the repairs are complete, I’m leaving Porvenir.

The port is 5km away.
I’ll drive while looking out at the ocean.

I arrived at the port in less than 10 minutes.

The building was under renovation, so I didn’t know where to wait, so I checked with several people before arriving.
Boarding starts at 1:00 PM, so I’ll wait for about an hour.

Before boarding, we were gathered in a separate area.
Here, my ticket’s QR code was scanned and boarding confirmation was given.

And now it’s time, I’m on board

I was told to put my motorcycle on the center stand instead of the side stand.
The back of the motorcycle was too heavy for me to lift, so I asked for help.

The ship is quite spacious.
This place was packed before departure.

I explore the ship

There is an outdoor terrace seating

Of course, there was seating on board.

In addition to the toilets, there was a cafeteria selling coffee and snacks.

There were about 100 people on board when we set sail.
On board, I barely had a cell phone signal (I’m a Movistar customer in Chile), but I had nothing to do.

I spent most of my time outside, but most people stayed inside.
It was windy outside, and I was pretty cold.
But I did pass through the Strait of Magellan.

After about two hours of sailing, the ship arrived in Punta Arenas.

I’m disembarking

It takes about 10 minutes from the port to Centro, so I head there right away.

The road along the sea is very open and pleasant.

And I arrived at the Plaza de Armas.

This trip didn’t leave me much time to ride my motorcycle, but I enjoyed it.
I’ll be staying in Punta Arenas for a while, so I’ll check for leaks two days before I leave and then get ready.
Date of ride: December 9, 2025
