Argentina

From San Miguel, Argentina to Fray Bentos, Uruguay

This time I’m going from San Miguel, Argentina to Fray Bentos, Uruguay.

The distance is about 270km.

I’m going to cross the border, and the process is very simple, so I’ll write about it in this article.

I’ll head east first to get on the highway.

The traffic there is heavy.

I was able to get on the highway in about 10 minutes.

There is a lot of traffic here too.

I paid the toll when I got here, but for some reason I was able to pass through for free this time.

There were a lot of people there, so maybe the place was under maintenance.

As I leave the main road to Rosario, the traffic suddenly thins out and I can move along smoothly.

I cross the bridge that marks the border between Buenos Aires and Entre Rios provinces.

After about two and a half hours, I arrived at Gualeguaychú, the border town with Fray Bentos.

Gasoline is expensive in Uruguay, so I fill up my tank at YPF.

At that time in Argentina, the price per liter was AR$1.204, or about 1.25 USD, but in Uruguay it was $U78.54, or about 1.91 USD!

Well, I arrived at customs in Argentina.

I was told that I don’t have to do anything here, so I’ll go ahead.

I have no formalities on the Argentine side and I cross the border bridge

My SD card had an error halfway through, so I wasn’t able to capture the whole thing.

There’s a toll booth just after crossing the bridge.

The toll is AR$2,600 or $U100, about 2.4 USD *January 2025

Immigration and customs are right after I get off the bridge.

Here, I can submit documents and undergo the inspection while still on my motorcycle.

But then I have to go through the paperwork, so I get off my motorcycle.

Here, I submit my ID and motorcycle documents and get checked.

These are the same as always: my passport, Cedula, Cedula Verde, and motorcycle insurance certificate.

After that, I get a red paper with a stamp on it, and head to the exit with it.

Then, I hand the red paper to the person in charge at the last building on the premises and have them lift the lever.

This completes the procedures for my departure from Argentina and my entry into Uruguay.

If I continue along the road, I can see the entrance to Fray Bentos.

I left San Miguel and arrived at Artigas Square, the center of Fray Bentos, about three hours later.

I’ve crossed the border before by bus, but the border between Argentina and Uruguay is particularly easy to cross.

There are security issues, but it’s very convenient for sane people.
